Gyprock Impactchek

Gyprock Impactchek is part of Gyprock’s specialty range of plasterboards. It’s reinforced core creates a high strength plasterboard designed for walls in high impact areas.

Gyprock Impactchek effectively reduces the damage caused by soft and hard body impact. The heavy duty lining paper provides a more scuff resistant surface, making this plasterboard ideal for high traffic areas.

Impactchek is also a fire and acoustic grade board and can be used in high impact areas where acoustic separation or a fire rated systems is specified.

Tested Impact Performance

The consistently high quality of Gyprock’s products is maintained by a continued focus on quality control and product testing. Internal testing to AS2588 is conducted in a CSR, NATA Accredited Laboratory. The impact testing summarised below was conducted externally by David Beneke Consulting.

Hard body impact

For this test, a 50mm diameter steel ball is dropped onto the board from increasing heights until failure occurs. Gyprock Impactchek provides the highest levels of hard body impact performance of all the Gyprock specialty (chek) range with only Gyprock EC08® Complete performing better.

Soft body impact

A weighted bag (27.2kg) is swung on a pendulum from increasing to strike the board sample until failure occurs. Impactchek outperforms all other boards in the Gyprock impact plasterboard range for soft body impact.

Gyprock Impactchek is not suitable where it would be in contact with water or a constant relative humidity above 90%. For wet areas, the following products would be more suitable:

Gyprock Impactchek is manufactured in Australia to Australian Standard AS2588 and the heavy-duty face paper is a violet colour.

Product Options

Gyprock Impactchek is 13mm thick, and is manufactured as a 1200mm wide, 3000mm long panel. The long edges are recessed for flush jointing.

Impactchek is predominantly specified for commercial installations in areas where there is a higher level of risk of impact damage. In residential construction, door frames and window reveals are generally designed for a 10mm internal lining but Impactchek can be effectively used with the appropriate framing adjustment.

Typical commercial applications:

  • Corridors
  • Foyers
  • Classrooms
  • Retail walls exposed to bumps and abrasion
  • Kids rumpus rooms
  • Games rooms
  • Garages
  • Any non-wet area wall where a higher level of impact resistance is required

Plasterboard Manufacture

Gyprock Impactchek is manufactured to AS/NZS 2588 Gypsum Plasterboard. Gyprock factories conduct regular testing under a Quality Management System complying with ISO 9001/2000.

Plasterboard Installation

AS/NZS2589: Gypsum linings – Application and Finishing outlines the procedures for the installation and finishing of plasterboard in conjunction with additional details for Gyprock Impactchek contained in Gyprock Technical Literature.

Levels of Finish

A Level of Finish sets out the minimum specifications for installation processes from framing preparation to painting and decoration. The levels are defined in AS/NZS 2589.1, and are intended to provide builders, installers and homeowners with defined methods and practices necessary to meet expectations in terms of the Level of Finish. They are not applicable to fire rated construction.
The level of finish should be specified prior to construction as it can be affected at different stages of construction and tolerances must be adhered to:

  • Frame construction

  • Plasterboard fixing and back-blocking

  • Plasterboard jointing and setting

Level 3 Finish is for areas that do not require painting and decoration such as above ceilings and inside service shafts.

A Level 4 Finish is the generally accepted level for domestic construction

A level 5 Finish should be specified wherever gloss, semi-gloss or dark coloured paints are to be used, or where critical glancing light conditions are likely.

More information on Levels of Finish can be found in the Gyprock Residential Installation Guide

Painting and Decoration

Finishes applied to plasterboard surfaces can have a significant effect on the perceived quality of the installation, particularly where critical lighting conditions exist.

  • Textured or heavy patterned finishes tend to hide imperfections
  • Matt finishes minimise imperfection visibility
  • Semi-gloss and gloss finishes highlight imperfections
  • Light colours are less likely to show imperfections and impact damage

Gyprock recommends paint systems consisting of one coat of a plasterboard sealer followed by two coats of finishing paint. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application and recoating.

Gyprock recommend decoration in line with Master Painters Australia.
